Manova - please stop drinking the Organized Labor "kook-aid"! You are absolutely right that many of the legal protections today's workers enjoy are the direct result of lobbying efforts of the "unions". But you cannot cite any recent advances for the American work force that the "union" has championed. If "unions" really had the American worker's best interest in mind, they would get out of the day-to-day workplace where they spend 70-90% of their time dealing with inappropriate member behavior on job, and they would focus on pro-active things to improve safety and make workers MORE efficient - not LESS! With all of the money and resources that today's Labor organizations have at their disposal, they should be helping to make the American workforce the fastest, safest, highest quality and most "economical" work force in the world. But they don't. WHY? Because if a plant has 200 people running it today, and they could put out the same product at the same quality standard but with 100 people - the union just lost the dues from 100 people!
As long as greedy humans run organizations (corporations or unions), they will be self-preservation minded idiots. The goal of the early unions was to create a work place where they were no longer needed - when that day came, they were so tied into "organized CRIME" and fat compensation plans that none of them were willing to walk away.
Now is the time for the rank-and-file members to demand that the unions do more to fix the problem (increase member training, negotiate for fewer contract restrictions, and reduce compensation for leaders)!
